'Bridging gaps and building bridges'
The goal of this research group is to develop, optimize and validate methods for testing the safety and effects of (natural) substances. Our in vitro methods represent an alternative to experiments involving live animals, so we also contribute to the refinement, reduction and replacement of animal testing in biological research (the 3 Rs).
For our research, the focus is on:
- Establishing relationships between diet and health;
- Bacterial resistance to antibiotics;
- The safety and efficacy of (natural) substances and mixtures.

We cooperate with other research institutes and universities, SMEs and larger partners from the business community. We work in consortia at the national and international levels, as well as through business-to-business partnerships. The research is funded by Dutch funds such as ZonMw, SIA-RAAK and Pieken in de Delta, and international funds such as the European Framework Programmes, ILSI and NC3Rs (Crack-it).
