Dr Ellen Gerrits has been professor of Speech Therapy since 2010. She is a speech-language pathologist and speech therapist. Alongside her work as professor, she is also chair of the Dutch Association for Voice, Speech and Language Pathology and editor of the Tijdschrift voor Stem-, Spraak- en Taalpathologie (‘Journal for Voice, Speech and Language Pathology’) and the specialist magazine Horen Zeggen (‘Hearsay’).

The relationship between language development disorders and dyslexia on the one hand, and hearing loss on the other hand, is Gerrits’ field of expertise. She focuses on evidence-based speech therapy. She and her research group aim to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of speech therapy. To do this, new knowledge must be developed, especially by means of impact studies. This knowledge serves to stimulate not only the profession of speech therapy, but also the curriculum of the Bachelor’s programme in Speech Therapy. Convincing speech therapists that they must work in an evidence-based manner is very important for Ellen Gerrits.
