Pieter Broertjes (born in 1952) has been special professor of Newspaper Publishing in the Digital Age within the Cross-media Quality Journalism research group since 2006. Since 2007, he has also been the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of World Press Photo. In February 2012 he became the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Rotterdam International Film Festival and a board member of the Press Museum.
Until September 2011, he served as the Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Postgraduate Education in Journalism, until July 2010 he was editor of De Volkskrant newspaper and until April 2006 he was president of the Society of Editors-in Chief and the member of the Brinkman Committee (which considered the future of artistic education) on behalf of the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Science. Since July 2011 he has been mayor of Hilversum.
On 22 June 2007, he published a public lecture entitled ‘Probeer het eens met de waarheid‘ (‘Try telling the truth’).
As a special professor, he plays a key role in translating demands from professional practice into new research proposals.
