Roelof Ettema (1965) is a nurse and completed his studies in Nursing Science in 1993 and in 2009 he completed the Master Epidemiology. He is a member of the research group ‘Nursing and allied health care for people with chronic illnesses’. Ettema is a staff lecturer at the Master Care Trajectory Design (MCD, the MBA for processes for care and welfare) of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. He is also a researcher at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care of the University Medical Center Utrecht.

Preventing complications hospitalization
Within the research group Ettema is working on the project Prevention decline in elderly cardiac surgery patients. Within this project ‘evidence-based’ nursing interventions will designed to prevent complications in the elderly occurring during to hospital admission with cardiac surgery.

The interventions focus on screening and preparing for hospitalization and therefore will take place prior to the hospitalization during the preoperative screening (POS). First, the (POS)-nurse selects these elderly who are vulnerable for of hospital complications. Second, in the (waiting) time for the actual admission, the nurse and the patient will work on the improving patients' psychosocial and physical condition.
